Full HD (1080p) if you are planning to take HD settop box. While if the content is SD then HD ready (720p) is sufficient.

Also the other thing to note is size of screen. If you take big size TV the SD content look blurry and soft, also even HD content might look blurry. So make sure size of screen not go beyond 43 inch if HD and if SD content then not beyond 32 inch.

Anyway I personally think 32 inch is ideal for 1080p HD content especially if planning to watch SD contents too. 43 inch and up to 55 inch for 4K HD to make sure video not get soft.

Concerning TV brands Sony is best and next is LG. Sony usually not require any colour calibration while other brands require it and not sure if able to change settings like in computer.

Purchase Price:

I assume you are buying online.

Showrooms don't keep old models, but you'll get amazing discounts for few-months old dated models on amazon, flipkart.

use buyhatke or such to filter your requirements.

HD/Picture Quality:

Remember, we are still years away (at least 4 years) from all channels beaming in HD.

It's like seeing a gif file on huge monitor.
your Settop Box video quality/Chromecast/Amazon Prime Videos..... dictates your TV's output.

Bigger the TV Size & ppi are the key.

You can get the display size of the incoming signal/ image by dividing the horizontal and vertical pixels by 72.

computer monitor displays photos roughly at 72 pixels per inch.

crudely 3.2 megapixel image fits 32 inch.....
4 megapixel image fits 40 inch...
more pixels don't directly add to better quality, I mean seeing 3.2 mega pixel on old 14" tv won't make it either image/TV better : ;

Note: If your TV installation is not free (Samsung charges for model names that don't start with U, nearly 4K which came as a surprise)..., then you are shelling out extra cash..

LED/Smart:
current capability of Android/Smart TV's aren't worth the extra 10K you shell out.

TV's have limited RAM size, so speed of browsing/switching is tiring....

Are you ok to wait for 10 sec to switch between channels, while using a remote. bit too much isn;t it...

Use that as benchmark. If OK with that much delay, You may go for Smart TV's.

Slots:
My need were:
1) USB slots on side - ease of put/remove
2) no wall mount, as need to tilt/turn TV on-need

Start with such need-list & then go shopping.

Please beware shopping online. Do call customer care of the brand to ask whether they provide warranty on online purchase through that seller or platform or not.

Example, Sony clearly has listed out some sellers for Amazon and related websites, where they will provide warranty only if bought through those sellers. There have been many customers who have not been provided warranty when purchased from any other seller other than what Sony has listed out on their website.

Similar can be the case with LG, Samsung or others.

For example, write on Google - Sony Authorized Online Seller

Sony is actually the best out of all. But if you are going to use HD channels, you can get cheaper TV in other brands, where you can also buy some really good speakers, which will be still lesser along with TV than of Sony's.

LG is the next.
